3d Printed Ultrasonic Record Cleaner Attachment : 7 Steps - paquettenothad
Creation: 3d Written Ultrasonic Record Cleaner Attachment
First, I just have to say "thanks" to Instructables for acquiring me to finish this send off. I've had the supersonic cleanser for a year before actually opening the design, but with the 3d printing process contest and "finally dressed contest" that provided the unscheduled shove I need to get remove my rump and start doing extraordinary design in Fusion360 :)
Now, a little of introduction...
"Cleanliness is next to Godliness," goes the adage. Nowhere is that more avowedly than in the wide planetary of vinyl playback. Vinyl radical, being a physical metier, can be unclothed to all style of dirt, rubble, or gunk. This is inauspicious, as the playback of records is one of the great pleasures of medicine listening. The tools and techniques shown here are a method to get the near out of your vinyl playback without disbursal a mint.
Background Why is cleaning indeed important? Vinyl radical records make music away dragging a small baseball field through a channel with an analog of the original soundwave produced by musicians carved into the groove. This vibrates the stylus, in turn the cantilever, and successively, a magnet or curlicue of wire (or iron). This vibration induces a on-going in a coil of wire, creating an electric signal analogous to the vibrations in the groove. Given the size of the groove, only about 40 micrometers crossways (see figure 1), it's relaxed to see that any dirt will derangement the smooth flow of the stylus riding the oscillations of the groove, thereby adding noise.

Vinyl records appeared around 1930, gaining in popularity after the instauratio of the Long Playing (LP) disc in 1948 by Columbia. In the disjunctive most 100 years, there have been many methods introduced for cleaning and caring for vinyl records. One of the most interesting developments in LP cleanup has been the introduction of ultrasonic dry cleaners. Ultrasonic cleaning works aside vibratory a bathroom of a solvent (commonly distilled pee) at ultrasonic frequencies to make small bubbles or cavitations. These bubbles collapse, with great power, loosening some grease or debris on the surface of the object being clean. This method acting of cleaning has been used for years for jewelry and in laboratory settings. The discovery in ultrasonic immortalize cleaning came with the intromission of the Audio frequency Desk Systeme Premium Vinyl Cleansing agent in 2009. Even so, atomic number 3 with many innovations, there are DIY designs going back years prior. This design has more than in common with those older DIY methods, delivery in the new(ish) technology of 3d printing process to make both of the components more in hand and less expensive than many commercially lendable products.
My design has the ability to raise/lower records for handily adding/removing them from the bath and (if needed) drying. I originally premeditated the mechanism to promote and bring dow from the front of the automobile, but that made it noncompliant to reach around back to add the records. Straight off I tour the machine sideways and I fundament easily raise/lower the mechanism and still access the unhearable assure panel.

Supplies
- 6L Ultrasonic Cleaner
- 3D Pressman and PLA filament
- 3D Model https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4386819
- 2x M2 bolts
- 2x M2 fruity
- 2x larger bolt, m5 OR m6 works well, but 1/4" besides works.
- 1x M5x45mm Carriage bolt (doesn't have to equal m5, just whatever will fit)
- 1x M5 annexe nut (fits to carriage bolt supra, so ensure you accept the matching sizing, string)
- 1x 3/16" rib rod, 3-4" long
- 1x 3/16" nut
- Some random nuts to work as spacers. ½" whole kit and caboodle American Samoa they slide o'er the 3/16" rod without piquant the thread. You can likewise 3d print some from the thingiverse model
- 1x Motor Shaft coupler. Rigid is improved, Motive union but flexible is every last I had suchlike this flexible shaft coupling
- 1x Small cogwheel motor
- 1x Adjustable output voltage Alternating current adapter
- 2 gallons distilled H2O
- A few drops of smasher goop
Step 1: Produce Materials
This system is made-up around a vulgar 6 liter unhearable cleanser that is commonly available on sites like eBay or Amazon. These models typically be around $120 US, though you may be able to recover them cheaper. These models are 40khz models that Crataegus laevigata be small to 60khz models. I have no means of verifying those claims, and I've found 40khz dry cleaners to work healthy adequate in my experience.
Formerly you have nonheritable an supersonic cleaner, you will also need memory access to a 3d printer. Mine is an Anet A8, which costs about $180 US (though they can equal found cheaper). If you can afford it, go for a nicer model like a Creality Cr10 (~$500) or a Prusa i3 Mk3 ($750). However, if you are new to 3d impression and you don't have a friend with a printer that you can get to make the parts, then the Anet A8 is a good place to start. Fair warning, 3d Printing, as a hobby is almost as time and money consuming every bit DIY audio!
Now that you've got your printer, you'll take around material to print. The standard material is PLA (poly beverage acid) which is cheap, light, stiff, and widely available. A kilogram of PLA is usually $20-30 US.
Once you have your printer establish and your consumables ready to go, it's time to print. The model and 3d print files for my cleaner are available on Thingiverse. Download the STL files and countersink up your printer to print them. After printing the files, we can at once assemble the pieces.
Step 2: Print the Parts!
Take the models from Thingiverse and publish them on your 3d Printer.
I printed mine with 0.8mm hooter, .2mm layer heights and 50% infill. Use whatever works for you. If you photographic print with supports, you may need to post-unconscious process a little. I used some 150 gritstone sandpaper to smooth the 'tracks' for the causative carriage.
Step 3: Foregather the Motor Rig
First, insert the carriage bolt through the crowning hole
Second, insert the efferent so the book binding is facing you and the shaft goes through the carriage
Third, screw down the motor to the carriage with the m2 screws and nuts
Fourth, attach the chicane coupling to the motor shaft. Create sure one of the position screws hits the flatcar part of the efferent jockey.
Fifth, insert the threaded rod or bolt into the union. I had to make do with a negotiable coupling. Rigid would be wagerer. A 7mm threaded rod would be saint. I didn't own that, indeed I'm using a 3/16 or 1/4" bolt that I cut the head off. Whatever you've got should work, as long as it's small enough to go through with the 0.286" + 0.001 - 0.002" hole in a record, simply big enough to Be held securely by the chicane coupler.
Step 4: Assemble the Main Bracket
Put a screw Oregon two in one of the holes at the rump of the square bracket. I had this nice 5mm pliant covered one, information technology fits perfectly. Use what you have. A regular bolt will perform honorable fine. There are few holes at the fundament of the bracket for 3mm, 5mm, or 8mm screws. Just thread into the plastic for now, don't tighten it.
Now learn the motor carriage and insert it at an angle thus the carriage bolt goes finished one slot and the motor stroller goes through and through the some other. When looking the main bracket, the carriage absquatulate goes to the right.
Next take the wingnut and washers and put them onto the posture bolt, tighten them down to hold the carriage in place. I used two washers and a lock washer to give some spacing. Tighten down the wingnut.
Now set up the main bracket/motor bearing assembly onto the side of the cleaner. You power have to lever IT on.
Finally, digit tighten the screw(s) on the bottom of the main bracket to hold it in place. Don't torsion them down so far!
Step 5: Wiring the Motor
This may be a trifle idiosyncratic to the hardware you wear hand.
I took the ends bump off of my AC/DC surround verruca's leads. This whitethorn be dicey. Don't fare it if you don't know what you are doing! The AC/DC transcriber I connected from Amazon has a time period block output, thusly you can cut the leads off of the motor and screw the bare wires into that terminal block. Consumption your top-grade judgement.
Ane affair you will deprivation to set is make sure the motor turns counterpunch-dextral. You want the nut securing your records to be screwing ON, not OFF. Ask me how I know
With everything wired aweigh, you should beryllium able to control the belt along of the motor with the voltage control on the ac adaptor.
Mistreat 6: Cleaning a Record
Now comes the fun bit!
Prove the motor all the way up. Put a spacer onto the shaft, put on a record, another spacer, and finally a nut to hold it bushed place.
Lower the efferent carriage.
Center the of import square bracket by laxation the screws at the hindquarters, and so slideway it back and forth to get the immortalize centered in the bath. Now stiffen the screw down. Just get it snug. Don't break down hulk along it, or you'll despoil the plastic out and let to get other larger screw.
Now you can add some cleaning changeful. You'll need 6 aroun liters of DISTILLED body of water. Add a partner off drops of Tergicleen or (if you're cheap) Get across dish aerial soap.
The level of your piddle should represent up to the level of the runout groove on your record. Don't submerge the label! The spacers don't dungeon water off the label!!
Turn on the motor and set the voltage so you get around 1-2 RPM.
Now information technology's time to turn connected the ultrasonic cleaner. Flip it on, and set the timer to 5-15 minutes. Dirtier records get longer. I wouldn't go over 15 minutes, in person.
Erst the cleaning cycle is done, you john raise the efferent carriage, speed up the efferent past flaring electric potential, this wish supporte the record air dry.
Of path, air drying is less that ideal (lots of dust in air out), so if you can, vacuum the record dry with a record vac.
Once the record is dry, number off the motor, the cleaner, remove the record, and a-okay listen. See if you haven't abstracted a fortune of those nasty clicks and pops!
Step 7: Ending
So, how does my homebrew record cleaner stack heavenward to more pricy high fidelity sound system models? I have no idea. If someone wants to charg ME one, I'll be glad to A/B them :)
However, I bathroom equivalence this to my beloved old Nitty Gritty vac. The Nitty Gritty is more roomy, providing a immortalis cleaning and drying station all in one. It's also quiet enough and fast adequate to keep up in my listening way. The ultrasonic cleaner is much louder for much longer (typically 10-15 minutes to clean a record). Where the ultrasonic shines is getting a lot of fine dirt and gunk kayoed of the grooves of a record. It takes thirster, but for at times cleaning a small tidy sum of records (3-4 at a time) information technology works fine.
I call up the ultrasonic cleansing agent is much better than give washables methods, though again, it's not so fast or convenient.
The best method acting might embody some combination of the 3: hand cleaning to get the big gunk loose, ultrasonic for getting out the ticket particles, and vacuuming the record dry to remove whatever cleaning residue. Experiments go on!
Keep your eyes on my thingiverse Thomas Nelson Page, as I'll believably be making updates to the design for things ilk improved ease-of-use and healthier drying.
:)
